LAND USE AND SPATIAL PLANNING AUTHORITY JOINS OTHER LAND SECTOR AGENCIES TO DEVELOP MODALITIES FOR FLOOD PREVENTION IN ACCRA.


A workshop on Effective Spatial Planning and Land Use Management for Flood Prevention in Greater Accra Region was held on February 21, 2023, at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for land sector agencies to discuss issues affecting development planning.
Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority joined the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development (MLGDRD), Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID)) and all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to develop modalities aimed at finding lasting solutions to perennial flooding in Accra.
The Authority through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development tasked all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to identify flooding areas, the causes and come up with measures geared toward the prevention of floods.
The participants from the MMDAs made presentations on the causes of flooding which included;
Indiscriminate Dumping of Waste,
Unauthorized Development in Waterways,
Undersized Drains,
Silt Choked Drains,
Encroachment on protected buffer zones and development of Ramsar sites among others
They also outlined some of the mitigative measures as desilting of drains,
Public sensitization and Education,
Protection of Delineated Buffers,
Lining of Earth Drains,
Arrest and Prosecution of Offenders Especially Tricycle Operators,
Demolition of Unauthorized Structures,
Construction of Waste Transfer Sites as well as
Widening of Drains
And Construction of Secondary Drains.
The MMDAs were encouraged to be proactive in the performance of their spatial planning functions to ensure orderly development and flood prevention to safeguard lives and properties.
